On-Line Data Backup

Data back-up is an essential part of any IT system. The eventual loss of data is inevitable. There are so many points of vulnerability. Here are the many ways we handle the potential pitfals:

• Hardware Failure-We recommend Hardware RAID solutions to prevent disk failure along with servers with redundant power supplies. This would be our first line of defense
• Software Failure-We recommend Tape Backup solutions for this as our second line of defense.
• Fire and Theft-Keeping a the last tape in a safe, or off-site is a cost effective way and faster than restoring from a remote backup service
• Mission Critical-In most cases, the above solutions will keep you up and running with minimal downtime if data needed to be restored. We also recommend a third line of defense and recommend Hard Drive imaging software that takes a complete image of the server and writes it external USB Hard Drives. This image can be restored very quickly without the initial reloading of any software before a restore can proceed from tape. We keep tape for the fire and theft scenarios.
• Virus-We recommend a server level Anti-Virus solution that makes sure all of your end-points (individually network connected PC’s) are current and up to date.

There are a number of solutions to backing up data - CD/DVD, external hard drives as well as on-line. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

External hard drives offer a much larger platform of space, can be automated and limited to the most up-to-date data. However, unless you maintain multiple sets of drives, always keeping one off-site, you have no protection from loss due to fire or theft. This is why we still recommend tapes. You must also maintain security against potential damages from hackers and/or viruses.

On-line back-up offers a solution that addresses all these needs and concerns. You control how much space you use. We see to it that it is always accessible by you from anywhere in the world and protected by a staff of security professionals.
